Claude Skills for Claude.md Starter

Scan your repo, infer the stack and conventions, and generate a fully populated CLAUDE.md in minutes. Asks at most 3 targeted questions for what can't be inferred from signal files.

Up and Running in 3 Steps

No external tools needed. Works on any project with a root directory Claude can read.

01

Open the GitHub Repo

Head to the Infrasity Labs GitHub repo for the Claude Skills collection. All notion skills live in the notion-skills folder.

Step 1: Open the GitHub repo
02

Download the ZIP File and Open the Folder

Click Code and select Download ZIP. Unzip the archive and open the folder so you can see the individual skill directories inside.

Step 2: Download the ZIP and open the folder
03

Navigate to the Skill and Compress It

Open the notion-skills directory, find the skill you want to install, and compress that specific folder into a ZIP file.

Step 3: Navigate to skill folder and compress it
04

Open Claude and Go to Customize, then Skills

Launch Claude on desktop or web, click your profile, go to Customize Claude, then open the Skills tab.

Step 4: Open Claude Skills settings
05

Add the Skill from Your Directory

Click Add Skill, select the ZIP you just created, and confirm. The skill is now active and ready to use in any Claude conversation.

Step 5: Add the skill from your directory
06

Run the Skill

Open a new Claude conversation, type your trigger command, and the skill runs. Your output is ready within seconds.

Step 6: Run the claude-md-starter skill in Claude

What the Claude.md Starter skill actually is?

Scan first, ask minimally, write once.

When triggered, Claude scans 14 signal files in your repo: package.json, Makefile, .github/workflows, .env.example, and more. It infers as much of the CLAUDE.md as possible from what it finds, then asks at most 3 targeted questions for the rest. The result is a real, populated CLAUDE.md with no placeholders.

It does not write placeholder sections. If a section cannot be filled from scanned data and the user doesn't answer the question that would fill it, that section is omitted entirely. Commands must be exact and runnable. What NOT To Do must have at least two real entries.

If a CLAUDE.md already exists with more than 200 characters, it runs a diff-and-merge flow, comparing the existing file with the generated version section by section, classifying each as NEW, ENHANCED, SAME, or CONFLICT, then offering three merge options before writing anything.

When it Triggers?

The skill activates when you say 'create a CLAUDE.md', 'my CLAUDE.md is blank', 'generate project context', 'initialize CLAUDE.md', 'set up Claude context for this repo', or 'fill in my CLAUDE.md'. It also triggers implicitly when you paste a near-empty CLAUDE.md and ask Claude to populate it, or when you keep re-explaining the same project context at the start of sessions.

It runs the scan immediately. No upfront questions before reading signal files. The scan happens first so the intake questions are informed by what was found, not asked blindly.

How Claude.md Starter works

Six nodes, scan-first. The scan informs the questions, not the other way around.

01

Detect

Check if CLAUDE.md exists. If it has more than 200 characters, enter diff-and-merge mode. If it's blank or absent, proceed directly to scan.

02

Scan

Read 14 signal files in parallel: package.json, pyproject.toml, Makefile, .github/workflows, Dockerfile, eslintrc, tsconfig, .env.example, README.md, and more. Missing files are skipped silently.

03

Infer

Draft all 8 CLAUDE.md sections from scanned data without asking a question: Project Overview, Tech Stack, Commands, Architecture, Code Conventions, Testing, What NOT To Do, and Environment Setup.

04

Grill-Me

Ask at most 3 targeted questions for what couldn't be inferred, all in one message, never across multiple turns. Skip any question whose answer was already found in signal files.

05

Generate

Write the full CLAUDE.md at the project root. Every section has real content. Commands are exact and runnable. Sections that can't be filled are omitted rather than written as placeholders.

06

Validate

Verify all populated sections have real content, the Commands section has at least 2 runnable commands, and What NOT To Do has at least 2 entries. Ask one final question if either check would fail.

What it generates

Eight sections, all derived from your actual repo, not generic boilerplate.

Commands: Exact, runnable commands inferred from package.json scripts, Makefile targets, and CI workflow run steps. No commands included that weren't found in signal files.

Architecture: Top-level directory structure, routing pattern, data layer, and file structure conventions inferred from folder layout and framework files.

Conventions: Naming patterns, formatting rules, and style preferences extracted from eslint, prettier, ruff, and tsconfig config files.

Environment: Required env vars from .env.example, external services from docker-compose, and API keys referenced in signal files, with a note on where to find each.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about installing and running these Claude Skills.

The claude-md-starter skill scans your repo's signal files: package.json, Makefile, .github/workflows, .env.example, and 10 others. It infers your stack, commands, architecture, and conventions, then writes a fully populated CLAUDE.md at the project root. It asks at most 3 questions for what can't be inferred and never writes placeholder sections.
If your existing CLAUDE.md has more than 200 characters, the skill runs a diff-and-merge flow instead of overwriting. It compares your existing file with the generated version section by section, classifies each as NEW, ENHANCED, SAME, or CONFLICT, and offers three options: keep existing and add new sections only (recommended), full replace, or review each conflict individually.
Signal files are files in your repo that reveal facts about your project without you having to explain them. The skill reads up to 14 types: package.json for framework and scripts, Makefile for named commands, .github/workflows for CI steps, .env.example for required env vars, tsconfig for TypeScript settings, eslint and prettier configs for code style, and more.
No. If a section cannot be filled from scanned data and the user doesn't provide the information in the intake questions, that section is omitted entirely. 'Add your commands here' is explicitly rejected as an anti-pattern.
The skill asks only for what it couldn't infer: typically, what the project does in one sentence (skipped if README was found), files or systems Claude should never touch, and any team conventions not captured in lint config. All applicable questions come in one message, never spread across turns.
