Everyone buys creators on follower count. The price does not follow it.

Here's what happens on most first campaigns. You shortlist five creators you already follow, pick the one with the biggest audience you can afford, pay, and get a spike in views, then nothing to point to in a pipeline review.

We pulled the numbers on that assumption. Across creators who gave a confirmed rate for a dedicated video, the correlation between subscriber count and price was r² = 0.001.

If price doesn't track audience size, it cannot be your selection criterion, your budget model, or your success metric. That shows up in three ways.

Rate quoted vs. subscriber count

583,000 subs$1,500
68,000 subs$4,800
42,900 subs$10,000

Cost per thousand subscribers ranged from $2.57 to $233 across confirmed quotes.

No idea what to pay

No vendor in this category publishes a rate card, so the first number a creator sends becomes the price. It rarely has to be.

Views arrive, leads don't

The top Google result for "b2b influencer marketing" is a marketer asking why micro-influencers gave them views and no signups. That is a tracking failure, not a creative one.

Nothing to defend in a pipeline review

Without per-creator attribution, you have one campaign total and no way to know which placement carried it, which means you cannot repeat the good one.

What you'll walk away with

The operating system we use to run creator campaigns for DevTool and AI infra companies, from sourcing the first name to defending the spend.

What creators actually charge

Rate bands for LinkedIn, X, YouTube, and Discord, drawn from confirmed quotes rather than estimates. The same creator charges 5 to 6 times more for a YouTube video than for a LinkedIn post, which makes LinkedIn the cheapest place to test your message.

ignore audience size

The 100-point creator fit score

The scoring card we run on every creator before anyone talks about money. Fifty-five of the hundred points have nothing to do with audience size, and follower count on its own scores zero.

Re: Sponsorship quote
$1,200 / video
$800 / video — locked in writing

The negotiation scripts, as we send them

Two real emails with names and figures redacted: the counter-offer that closed a $1,200 quote against an $800 budget, and the follow-up that locks the rate before the brief goes out.

86%

One placement of five carried 86% of all views

How to size a budget so variance doesn't eat it

Creator placements follow a power law, not an average. In our audit of one competitor's program, a single placement delivered 85.6% of all 114,191 views across five placements.

ReachClicksThreadsSignupsActivated

Attribution your CFO will accept

A five-rung ladder from qualified reach to activated accounts. Per-creator UTMs, promo codes, self-reported attribution for dark-social traffic, and a monthly sweep for compounding versus fading content.

A look inside the playbook

Nine strategies, in the order you run them.

01

Understand how influence works on technical buyers

Why expertise beats aspiration in B2B, and what that rules out.

02

Choose each channel for one specific job

LinkedIn, YouTube, X, Discord, and Reddit each do one thing well.

03

Build a long list of 150, not a shortlist of 15

The ten columns to track, and four places to find creators.

04

Score creators on fit, not follower count

The 100-point card and why price ignores audience size.

05

Negotiate every rate, then lock it in writing

Duration bands, format levers, and the scripts.

06

Brief on constraints, never on wording

The 61% versus 3% click-through gap between a practitioner post and a sponsored one.

07

Budget for five to seven placements, not one

Sizing against a power law.

08

Distribute creator content through your own channels

Why the creator supplies credibility, and you supply reach.

09

Track attribution per creator, then rotate

The tracking to build before you spend a dollar.

Plus a 30-day run sheet with owners and dates, and a month-by-month view of what to expect.

See every creator, projection, and result in one place

The playbook is the method. Influencer OS is where our clients watch it run.

737 vetted creators across YouTube, LinkedIn, X, Substack, Discord, Dev.to, Medium, and newsletters. Filter to the intersection of platform and niche that matches your buyer, then sort by ICP-fit grade rather than follower count.

Nothing publishes without your approval.

What this has produced

218K+

monthly qualified reach

Across a single DevTool creator program, from a roster built out of 200+ screened creators.

61% vs 3%

practitioner vs sponsored click-through

Same LinkedIn feed, same week. 312 likes against 6. The variable was the voice, not the spend.

641

signups attributed to creator placements

Tracked per creator with dedicated UTMs, so we knew which placements to recommission.

15 days

kickoff to first live placement

LinkedIn and X publish within two weeks. YouTube follows the creator's production calendar.

Built for teams spending between $3K and $15K a month

Written for the person who has to defend the line item.

This is for you if

  • VP Marketing, Head of Growth, CMO, DevRel leads, or a fractional CMO covering all of it
  • A CLI, API, SDK, agent framework, observability platform, or infra engineers evaluate before signing
  • Pre-seed through Series B, where the numbers in this playbook were gathered

Not a fit if

  • You sell to a non-technical buyer
  • Your budget only funds a single placement

On the second point, the playbook says so directly and tells you to wait.

B2B influencer marketing is the practice of partnering with credible practitioners to build with your product and tell their professional audience what they found. The deliverable is a technical opinion rather than an advertisement, the audience is a buying committee rather than a consumer, and success is measured in qualified signups and pipeline rather than impressions.
Yes, through a different mechanism than consumer influencer marketing. Consumer campaigns rely on identification, where the audience wants to be like the creator. B2B runs on expertise, where the audience is borrowing a technical judgment. Research in Industrial Marketing Management found that a B2B influencer's perceived competence affects purchase intent regardless of whether the buyer identifies with them, which is why a 15,000-follower practitioner often outperforms a 400,000-follower generalist.
There is no reliable per-follower rate. In our sourcing data, cost per 1,000 subscribers ranged from $2.57 to $233.10 across 12 rate-confirmed quotes, with no statistical relationship to audience size. Practical bands: $700 to $2,000 for a LinkedIn post, $500 to $8,000 for an X thread, and $1,100 to $20,000 for a dedicated YouTube video. Always ask for the integrated rate alongside the dedicated one.
Five to seven. Placement results follow a power law rather than an average. In our audit of one DevTool competitor, a single placement out of five accounted for 85.6% of all views, so buying one placement is like buying a single draw from a very high-variance distribution.
LinkedIn or X first, then YouTube. The same creator charges roughly five to six times more for a YouTube video than for a LinkedIn post, and LinkedIn publishes in one to two weeks, compared to three to six for video. Test the message where it's cheap and fast, then commit the expensive slot to a message you've already seen work.
With a five-rung ladder: qualified reach, landing page clicks, threads spawned, signups, and activated accounts. Build per-creator UTMs, a promo code per creator, and a "how did you hear about us" field before you spend, because a large share of developer traffic arrives without a referrer. Report every rung and defend the bottom two.
