What the Blog Cannibalization skill actually is?

Find competing pages before they split your rankings

The Blog Cannibalization skill detects when multiple posts on your site compete for the same search keywords, splitting authority that should sit on one page. It extracts primary keywords from titles and headings, clusters semantically similar targets, and flags the pages that overlap.

It runs in two modes. Local mode is the default, free, and needs no API keys: it analyzes file content with Glob, Grep, and Read. API mode, enabled with the --api flag, uses DataForSEO's Page Intersection and Ranked Keywords endpoints at roughly one cent per call to layer in real SERP positions, search volume, and CPC.

Every flagged cluster gets a severity level, Critical, High, Medium, or Low, and one of four recommendations: MERGE, DIFFERENTIATE, CANONICAL, or NO ACTION. The output is a summary table plus per-cluster detail explaining which post is stronger and exactly what to do about the overlap.

When it Triggers?

Invoke it with phrases like "cannibalization", "keyword overlap", "competing pages", "duplicate keywords", or "cannibalize". It accepts an optional target directory and an optional --api flag, defaulting to local analysis of Markdown, MDX, and HTML files while skipping node_modules, .git, and drafts.

Use it when several posts seem to target the same topic, when rankings for a keyword keep flip-flopping between two URLs, or as a periodic audit before publishing more content in a crowded pillar. If you pass --api without DataForSEO credentials configured, it falls back to local mode automatically and tells you.

Keyword extraction and clustering

Tokenizes titles and H1s into 1, 2, and 3-gram phrases, scores them across headings and the first paragraph, and groups posts by exact match, stem match, semantic overlap, or subset match into intent clusters.

Two analysis modes

Runs free local analysis via file content by default, or layers DataForSEO Page Intersection and Ranked Keywords data, real positions, volume, and CPC, at about one cent per call when you add the --api flag.

Severity scoring

Assigns Critical, High, Medium, or Low to each cluster. API mode uses an overlap-count, search-volume, and position-gap formula, while local mode uses a heuristic keyed to exact, stem, semantic, and subset matches.

It is when two or more of your own posts target the same keyword or search intent, so they compete against each other in search results. That splits authority, link equity, and click-through between pages instead of concentrating it on one, often pushing both down the rankings.
Local mode is the default, free, and needs no keys: it extracts and clusters keywords from your file content with Glob, Grep, and Read. API mode, enabled with --api, calls DataForSEO Page Intersection and Ranked Keywords at about one cent per call to add real SERP positions, search volume, and CPC.
It extracts a primary keyword from each post by scoring 1 to 3-gram phrases across the title, H1, H2s, and first paragraph, then clusters posts using four rules in priority order: exact match, stem match, semantic overlap, and subset match.
Critical means the same exact keyword with both pages in the top 20, High means the same cluster where one page outranks the other, Medium means related keywords with partial SERP overlap, and Low means surface-level similarity but genuinely different intents that you only need to monitor.
Four. MERGE combines thin duplicate posts and 301-redirects the weaker URL, DIFFERENTIATE retargets the weaker post to a long-tail and updates its title and meta, CANONICAL points the duplicate at the authority page, and NO ACTION documents why two similar-looking posts actually serve different intents.
It falls back to local mode automatically and notifies you, so the audit still runs. It also handles other edge cases gracefully: it retries once on a rate limit, skips unreachable URLs, and reports clearly if a directory has no blog files or only a single post.
