Claude Skill for Web Design Guidelines

Fetches the latest Web Interface Guidelines from Vercel Labs, reads your UI files, and checks every rule, outputting findings in a concise file:line format. Covers accessibility, form UX, animation, navigation, and performance patterns.

VIEW ON GITHUBHOW IT WORKS

Up and Running in 5 Steps

Clone the repo, open Claude Code, and ask it to review your UI files. The skill fetches the latest guidelines and runs every check, file by file.

01

Open the GitHub Repo

Head to the Infrasity Labs GitHub repo for the Claude Skills collection. All web design skills live in the web-design folder.

Step 1: Open the GitHub repo
02

Download the ZIP File and Open the Folder

Click Code and select Download ZIP. Unzip the archive and open the folder so you can see the individual skill directories inside.

Step 2: Download the ZIP and open the folder
03

Navigate to the Skill and Compress It

Open the web-design directory, find the skill you want to install, and compress that specific folder into a ZIP file.

Step 3: Navigate to skill folder and compress it
04

Open Claude and Go to Customize, then Skills

Launch Claude on desktop or web, click your profile, go to Customize Claude, then open the Skills tab.

Step 4: Open Claude Skills settings
05

Add the Skill from Your Directory

Click Add Skill, select the ZIP you just created, and confirm. The skill is now active and ready to use in any Claude conversation.

Step 5: Add the skill from your directory
06

Run the Skill

Open a new Claude conversation, describe what you need — paste a URL to audit, describe a UI to design, or ask it to review your files — and the skill runs immediately.

Step 6: Run the web-design-guidelines skill in Claude

How the review works

Four steps from file to findings

01

Fetch latest guidelines

Fetches the current Web Interface Guidelines from the Vercel Labs GitHub repo before each review. Always runs against the latest version — never a cached or stale copy of the rules.

02

Read specified files

Reads the files or file pattern you provide. If no files are specified, asks which ones to review. Works with any UI code: React, HTML, CSS, Tailwind, or raw markup.

03

Apply all rules

Checks every rule from the fetched guidelines against the code. Rules cover accessibility (contrast, ARIA, keyboard navigation), form UX, animation and reduced-motion, navigation patterns, and layout performance.

04

Output findings + remediation

Reports findings in terse file:line format. After identifying issues, maps each finding to the closest ui-ux-pro-max domain for deeper remediation guidance: accessibility, forms, animation, navigation, or performance.

What the Web Design Guidelines skill actually is?

A live guidelines audit, not a linter with static rules

The web-design-guidelines skill fetches the Web Interface Guidelines from Vercel Labs on every run — `https://raw.githubusercontent.com/vercel-labs/web-interface-guidelines/main/command.md` — so it always reviews against the current version of the guidelines rather than a hardcoded snapshot. The fetched content contains all rules and the output format instructions.

Findings are reported in a terse `file:line` format. After finding issues, the skill maps each category of finding to the appropriate `ui-ux-pro-max` domain for remediation: accessibility findings route to `accessibility contrast aria keyboard`, form UX findings to `forms validation error feedback`, animation issues to `animation reduced-motion timing`, navigation issues to `navigation breadcrumb back behavior`, and layout/performance issues to `layout shift lazy loading performance`.

This two-stage design means the audit tells you what's wrong and exactly where to look for how to fix it, without mixing the two concerns in one output.

When it Triggers?

Triggers on: 'review my UI', 'check accessibility', 'audit design', 'review UX', 'check my site against best practices', 'does this meet guidelines', 'check my component', or when you provide a file path and ask for a compliance review.

Run it after the frontend-design skill has set visual direction and after ui-styling has implemented components — it's the QA step, not the planning step. For the most valuable use, run it before shipping any new page or component to catch accessibility and UX issues before they reach production.

Five finding categories

Each maps to a ui-ux-pro-max remediation domain for follow-up

Accessibility: Color contrast, ARIA roles and labels, keyboard navigation focus order, screen reader compatibility, and interactive element sizing. Maps to `accessibility contrast aria keyboard` in ui-ux-pro-max.

Form UX: Input validation timing, error message placement and clarity, required field marking, inline feedback, and form submission states. Maps to `forms validation error feedback`.

Animation & Motion: Reduced-motion media query respect, animation timing and easing, hover state transitions, and avoiding motion that can cause vestibular disorders. Maps to `animation reduced-motion timing`.

Navigation: Breadcrumb implementation, back-button behavior, deep link handling, mobile bottom nav constraints, and adaptive navigation patterns. Maps to `navigation breadcrumb back behavior`.

Performance & Layout: Cumulative layout shift sources, lazy loading implementation, image sizing attributes, render-blocking resources, and font loading strategy. Maps to `layout shift lazy loading performance`.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about installing and running these Claude Skills.

An open-source specification maintained by Vercel Labs covering UI best practices for accessibility, form UX, animation, navigation, and performance. They're living guidelines updated as browser capabilities and user expectations evolve. The skill always fetches the current version before running a review.
Provide a file path or pattern when invoking the skill, for example 'review src/components/Form.jsx' or 'review src/app/**/*.tsx'. If no files are specified, the skill asks which ones to review before proceeding.
Findings are reported in terse file:line format — for example 'Button.jsx:42: Missing aria-label on icon-only button'. Each finding is one line with the file, line number, and a short description. After the findings list, the skill maps each category to a ui-ux-pro-max remediation domain for follow-up.
The skill fetches the guidelines source URL on every run — it never uses a cached copy. When Vercel Labs updates the guidelines, the next run automatically uses the new rules. No skill updates required.
No — it identifies and locates issues. Fixes require changes to your code, often using the ui-styling skill for component-level changes. The design is intentional: the audit and the fix are separate steps so you can review findings before applying any changes.
A companion skill in the web-design cluster that provides deeper UX guidance via a searchable knowledge base. After finding issues with web-design-guidelines, query ui-ux-pro-max with the relevant domain keywords to get detailed remediation rules, examples, and implementation patterns for each category of finding.
