What the Responsive Design actually does

Designs layouts and interactions that work across all screen sizes and input methods.

Responsive design is not a single breakpoint check. It is a system of decisions about how layout, typography, component behavior, and interaction patterns shift across the full range of screen sizes and input contexts that real users encounter. This skill covers the structural design work: defining breakpoints, specifying fluid grid behavior, documenting component adaptation rules, and handling the interaction pattern shifts that differ between touch and pointer input.

Mobile-first design is the recommended starting point because mobile constraints force prioritization decisions about content and interaction that often improve the desktop experience as well. Designing desktop-first and then trying to compress into mobile almost always produces compromises. Designing mobile-first and then expanding into desktop creates a natural escalation of complexity that matches the increasing capability of larger screens.

How it works

The skill establishes the responsive system from content priorities through component adaptation in four stages.

01

Define Content Priority

Start with mobile and rank every content element by its importance to the user's core task. Content that does not make the mobile cut is either deprioritized across all screens or reserved for progressive disclosure at larger sizes.

02

Establish the Breakpoint System

Define breakpoints based on where the content naturally breaks rather than on specific device dimensions. Document the fluid grid column counts, gutter widths, and container max-widths at each breakpoint.

03

Document Component Adaptation Rules

For each component in the design system, define how it adapts across breakpoints: which properties change (layout, size, truncation, visible controls) and which stay constant. Components without documented adaptation rules break inconsistently in responsive implementation.

04

Specify Interaction Pattern Shifts

Identify where touch and pointer input require different interaction patterns: hover states that have no touch equivalent, drag interactions that need long-press alternatives, and navigation patterns that shift between bottom navigation and top navigation across screen sizes.

What you get back

A complete responsive design specification that engineering can implement without ambiguity.

  • A content priority matrix ranking every page element by mobile importance, with deferral decisions documented
  • A breakpoint system specification with column counts, gutter widths, and container max-widths at each breakpoint
  • Component adaptation rules for every design system component, covering property changes across breakpoints
  • An interaction pattern shift document identifying where touch and pointer require different design solutions
  • Responsive design comps at three or more breakpoints for all key templates and component states

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about installing and running these Claude Skills.

Mobile-first means starting the design process with the smallest screen constraint and adding complexity as screen size increases, rather than starting at desktop and trying to reduce complexity for mobile. It is both a design philosophy and a CSS implementation approach where base styles target small screens and media queries add styles for larger ones.
Breakpoints should be set where the content naturally breaks, not at specific device widths. Resize the browser from narrow to wide with the content in place and set a breakpoint wherever the layout becomes uncomfortable to read or use. This produces content-driven breakpoints that remain useful as device sizes continue to evolve.
Document adaptation rules as a table or specification sheet per component, listing each breakpoint range and the property changes that apply at that range. Include the rationale for each change so engineers understand the intent and can make judgment calls when edge cases arise during implementation.
Hover states must have a functional equivalent in touch contexts. Tooltip patterns that trigger on hover need a tap-to-reveal alternative. Dropdown menus triggered by hover need a tap-to-open behavior. Navigation that reveals secondary controls on hover needs a visible control that touch users can tap. Document the touch alternative alongside every hover-dependent interaction.
Responsive design uses fluid grids and CSS media queries so a single layout responds continuously to any screen size. Adaptive design serves distinct, fixed layouts targeted at specific breakpoint ranges. Most modern products use responsive design as the default and reserve adaptive design for cases where the experience at a specific breakpoint needs to differ fundamentally from the responsive flow.
