What the Layout Grid actually does

A responsive layout grid gives every screen size a consistent structural foundation for content placement.

A layout grid system defines the invisible scaffold that content hangs on: the number of columns, the gutter width between them, and the margin between the grid and the viewport edge. These three parameters, specified per breakpoint, determine how content reflows across screen sizes and whether the layout feels deliberate or haphazard. A well-defined grid makes it possible for designers to place elements with confidence and for developers to implement layouts without guessing at intended behavior at edge-case widths.

The grid must balance structural consistency with content flexibility. Rigid grids that force every element to span the same column count produce monotonous layouts; grids without clear rules produce inconsistency across contributors. This skill defines the column structure and gutter/margin values for each breakpoint, specifies how column counts change across the responsive range, and documents the exceptions: which component types may break out of the grid and under what conditions.

How it works

The grid system is defined in four stages from viewport analysis to token documentation.

01

Breakpoint Definition

Establish the breakpoint set based on content needs and device distribution. Define the viewport ranges each breakpoint covers and the minimum and maximum content widths at each range.

02

Column and Gutter Specification

Define the column count, gutter width, and margin value for each breakpoint. Derive these from the content types the grid must support, not from arbitrary convention.

03

Content Mapping

Map primary content types (text, images, cards, forms, data tables) to column spans at each breakpoint. Document the expected reflow behavior when a layout transitions from one breakpoint to the next.

04

Token and Documentation

Codify the grid as design tokens. Document the system with annotated examples at each breakpoint, grid-break rules for full-bleed elements, and guidance on nesting grids within grid columns.

What you get back

A complete responsive grid specification ready for design and development implementation.

  • Breakpoint set with viewport ranges and maximum content widths for each
  • Column count, gutter width, and margin values specified at every breakpoint
  • Column span recommendations for primary content types across all breakpoints
  • Reflow behavior documented for each major layout pattern at breakpoint transitions
  • Design tokens for grid values and usage guidelines for full-bleed and nested grid exceptions

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about installing and running these Claude Skills.

Twelve columns is the most common choice for desktop grids because twelve divides evenly into halves, thirds, fourths, sixths, and twelfths, giving maximum layout flexibility. Four columns is standard for mobile. Eight columns is a reasonable middle option for tablet. The right number depends less on convention than on the range of content widths the product must support simultaneously.
Gutters are the spaces between columns; margins are the spaces between the outermost columns and the viewport edge. Gutters control the density of multi-column layouts and must be wide enough to visually separate adjacent content. Margins control how much breathing room the entire grid has relative to the screen edge and are often larger on desktop than mobile to prevent content from pressing against the viewport.
A common progression is 4 columns on mobile (below 768px), 8 columns on tablet (768 to 1024px), and 12 columns on desktop (above 1024px). However, the progression should be driven by content needs: if the product primarily uses two- and three-column card grids, the column count at each breakpoint should be divisible by both two and three. Choosing column counts that do not divide evenly into the most common content layouts creates forced awkward spans.
Full-bleed images, hero sections, background color bands, and wide data visualizations are the most common legitimate grid breaks. The rule is that breaking the grid should be intentional and meaningful: a grid break draws attention and signals something significant, so using it for decorative reasons dilutes its power. Document every grid-break exception in the system so contributors apply them consistently.
A fixed-width grid snaps between defined widths at each breakpoint, so the layout is the same within a breakpoint range regardless of exact viewport width. A fluid grid scales column widths continuously as the viewport changes. Most modern products use a hybrid: fluid scaling within breakpoint ranges with fixed maximum content widths that prevent lines of text from becoming uncomfortably long on very wide screens.
