What the Gesture Patterns actually does

Gesture design turns touch and pointer input into interactions that feel natural rather than accidental.

Gestures, swipe, pinch, drag, long-press, and their pointer-device equivalents, are powerful interaction primitives. They allow users to manipulate content directly and perform actions quickly. But they come with significant design challenges: gestures are invisible by default, they can conflict with system-level gestures, and they require fallbacks for users who cannot perform them or who simply do not know they exist.

This skill covers the design of gesture-based interactions from affordance through implementation. It addresses how to make gestures discoverable without a tutorial, how to handle conflicts between app gestures and platform gestures, how to provide non-gesture alternatives for every gesture-controlled action, and how to specify gesture behaviour in handoff documentation so developers implement them correctly.

How it works

Gesture design runs through four stages: map, design affordances, specify behaviour, and define fallbacks.

01

Map Gesture Interactions

Catalogue every gesture in the product or proposed design. For each, document the trigger, the action it performs, the feedback it provides, and whether it conflicts with platform-level gestures such as system swipe-to-go-back.

02

Design Discoverability Affordances

Define how users learn that a gesture exists: visual cues such as edge shadows or drag handles, animated hints shown on first visit, or contextual tooltips. Gestures that are not discoverable are not features; they are hidden functionality.

03

Specify Gesture Behaviour

Document threshold distances, velocity requirements, direction constraints, and interruptibility for each gesture. Specify what happens during the gesture (live feedback) and after it completes or is cancelled.

04

Define Non-Gesture Fallbacks

For every gesture-controlled action, specify an equivalent tap, button, or menu-based fallback. This is required for accessibility and for contexts where gestures are unreliable, such as on trackpads, in low-precision scenarios, or for users with motor differences.

What you get back

A complete gesture specification covering affordances, behaviour, conflicts, and fallbacks.

  • Gesture inventory listing every gesture, its trigger, action, and feedback
  • Discoverability design for each gesture with affordance and hint specifications
  • Behaviour spec covering thresholds, velocity, directionality, and cancellation
  • Platform conflict analysis identifying gestures that overlap with system-level interactions
  • Non-gesture fallback documentation ensuring every action has an accessible alternative

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about installing and running these Claude Skills.

Use visual affordances that imply the gesture: a drag handle icon suggests draggability, a partially visible card suggests swipeability, a subtle edge gradient suggests there is more content off-screen. Animated hints shown once on first use are effective for non-obvious gestures. The goal is to make the interface communicate the gesture without requiring the user to read instructions.
Swipe-to-delete on a list item and the iOS swipe-from-left-edge back gesture can conflict if the swipe-to-delete starts at the left edge. Constrain the swipe-to-delete trigger to start from within the item bounds rather than the screen edge, and use a right-to-left swipe direction for destructive actions to avoid the conflict entirely.
Gestures should provide continuous, direct feedback during the interaction. A card being dragged should visually follow the user's finger in real time. A swipe-to-delete should progressively reveal a delete affordance as the swipe distance increases. This live feedback confirms that the gesture is being recognised and gives the user confidence to complete the action.
A minimum distance of 20 to 30 density-independent pixels prevents accidental trigger during imprecise touches. Combine the distance threshold with a direction tolerance angle of 30 to 45 degrees to distinguish intentional directional swipes from general scrolling. Document these thresholds in the handoff spec so developers implement consistent gesture recognition.
Gestures are not inherently accessible. Users with motor differences, voice control users, and switch access users cannot rely on touch gestures. Every gesture must have a non-gesture equivalent: a button, a menu item, or a keyboard shortcut. Screen reader users interact through a different gesture vocabulary, so ensure that assistive technology interactions are designed and tested alongside the standard gesture patterns.
