What the SEO Hreflang skill actually is?

An international SEO validator and generator

The seo-hreflang skill validates and generates hreflang implementations for multi-language and multi-region websites. Validation checks eight critical criteria: self-referencing tags, bidirectional return tags, proper x-default fallback, ISO 639-1 language codes, ISO 3166-1 region codes, canonical URL alignment, protocol consistency, and cross-domain support.

A common and site-breaking error this skill catches: using 'eng' instead of 'en', or 'en-uk' instead of 'en-GB'. Missing self-references and absent return tags cause Google to disregard hreflang signals entirely — a frequent silent failure that creates international content duplication problems.

Generation creates correct implementations via three methods: HTML link tags (for sites with fewer than 50 language variants), HTTP headers (for non-HTML files like PDFs), and XML sitemaps (recommended for large-scale multilingual deployments). The skill also assesses cultural adaptation across locales and validates content parity between language versions.

Hreflang must be bidirectional. If page A points to page B as its French version, page B must also point back to page A as its English version. Missing return tags cause Google to disregard the entire hreflang cluster.
