It is a persuasion document that must move a specific audience from a current belief to a new one, whether that is getting approval to proceed, securing engineering resources, or aligning stakeholders on a direction. Identify the specific decision or belief change you need from this audience. Every structural choice in the presentation is optimized to produce that outcome, not to show all the work you did.

Open with user context, problem evidence, and the cost of the current state. Use data and representative user quotes where available. Give the audience a reason to care about the solution before you show it.

Structure Design Decisions

Present design decisions as responses to specific problem components, not as aesthetic choices. Show the options you considered, the criteria you used to evaluate them, and why the chosen direction best serves the user and the business.

Close with Evidence and Next Steps

A design critique audience wants to engage with design decisions and explore alternatives, so spend more time on the options-considered section and invite discussion. An executive review audience wants to understand the problem, trust the solution, and approve next steps, so compress the design detail and expand the evidence and business impact sections.
Show enough process to demonstrate rigor without burying the recommendation in research documentation. A brief reference to the research foundation, a summary of options considered, and clear decision rationale is usually sufficient. Reserve detailed process documentation for design critiques or project retrospectives.
