What the Motion System actually does

A motion system defines consistent, purposeful animation across a product while respecting accessibility preferences.

A motion system gives animation the same systematic treatment that a design system gives color or typography: named tokens, defined purposes, and documented rules. Without a motion system, animation decisions are made component-by-component by whoever is building each feature, producing a product where some transitions feel snappy, others sluggish, and the overall motion character is incoherent. With a motion system, every animation draws from the same duration tokens and easing vocabulary, so the product moves with a consistent personality.

Accessibility is a non-negotiable layer of any motion system. The CSS media query prefers-reduced-motion signals that a user has opted out of motion, either because of vestibular disorders triggered by animation, or personal preference. A motion system defines exactly which animations are purely decorative (and should be disabled), which carry functional information (and should be replaced with a non-motion equivalent), and how the product gracefully degrades when motion is unavailable.

How it works

The motion system is defined in four stages from animation audit through token documentation.

Motion Audit

Catalog every animation currently in the product. Classify each as functional (communicates state, relationship, or feedback), expressive (reinforces brand character), or decorative (purely aesthetic with no informational value).

Duration Token Definition

Define three to five named duration tokens covering the range from micro-interactions (100 to 150ms) through page transitions (300 to 500ms). Each token should have a defined use case and a rationale for its value.

Easing Vocabulary

Define the easing curves for each motion context: ease-out for elements entering the screen (starts fast, ends slow), ease-in for elements leaving (starts slow, ends fast), ease-in-out for elements changing position within the screen.

Reduced-Motion Specification

For each animation in the system, specify the prefers-reduced-motion behavior: disable the animation entirely, replace it with an instant state change, or substitute a non-motion feedback (such as a color change) that carries the same information.

A minimal but complete duration token set covers at least three ranges: fast (100 to 150ms) for micro-interactions like button presses and hover states, medium (200 to 300ms) for content reveals, dropdowns, and modal appearances, and slow (400 to 500ms) for page-level transitions and complex choreographed sequences. Some systems add an extra-fast token for haptic-like feedback and an extra-slow token for emphasis animations. Each token should have a documented purpose rather than just a number.
Ease-out animations start fast and slow down as they reach their end state, which mirrors how physical objects behave when coming to rest. This makes ease-out feel natural for elements entering the screen. Ease-in animations start slow and accelerate, which mirrors objects beginning to move from rest, making ease-in feel natural for elements leaving the screen. Using ease-in for entrance animations or ease-out for exit animations produces motion that feels physically wrong and slightly uncanny.
The prefers-reduced-motion: reduce media query should be implemented as a global override in the CSS layer, then refined per-component where the functional information carried by an animation requires a non-motion substitute. Decorative animations can simply be disabled. Functional animations, such as a toast notification sliding in to communicate a success state, should be replaced with an equivalent that does not use position or scale change, such as an instant opacity transition or a color pulse.
Three to five easing curves is the practical range. A minimal system needs: a standard ease-out for entrances, a standard ease-in for exits, and an ease-in-out for position changes within the screen. An expanded system might add a spring curve for expressive interactions and a linear curve for animations where consistent speed matters (such as progress bars). More than five curves creates decision fatigue without meaningful perceptible difference between options.
Functional animation communicates information about state, relationship, or hierarchy: a dropdown revealing beneath its trigger, an error state shaking to draw attention, or a sidebar expanding to show navigation. Expressive animation reinforces brand character and emotional tone without carrying unique informational content: a delightful bounce on a success completion, a smooth page entrance that conveys premium quality. The distinction matters for reduced-motion handling: functional animations need non-motion alternatives; expressive animations can often simply be disabled.
