What the Metrics Definition actually does

UX metrics connect design decisions to measurable business and user outcomes through a structured measurement framework.

Defining UX metrics is the work of translating design intentions into numbers that can be tracked, compared, and used to make decisions. Without defined metrics, design improvements are argued on aesthetics and opinion rather than demonstrated through data. This skill establishes which metrics to measure for each user outcome, what baseline values to collect, and how to interpret movement in those numbers as evidence that a design change is helping or hurting.

The metrics definition work covers both attitudinal metrics (what users say) and behavioral metrics (what users do). Task success rate, time-on-task, and error rate are behavioral; CSAT and NPS are attitudinal. Neither category alone tells the full story: a task users complete but hate, or one they say they love but abandon in practice, both represent design problems. Instrumentation guidance ensures each metric is measured in a consistent, reliable way so that comparisons across time and across cohorts are valid.

How it works

The metrics framework builds in four stages from goal setting through instrumentation specification.

01

Outcome Alignment

Map design goals to user outcomes and business outcomes. For each goal, define what success looks like in terms users would recognize and in terms the business tracks.

02

Metric Selection

Choose the specific metrics that most directly measure each outcome. For each metric, define the collection method, the target population, and the conditions under which it will be measured.

03

Baseline and Target Setting

Establish current baseline values for each metric through existing data or a measurement sprint. Set improvement targets that are specific, time-bound, and justified by the scope of the design change.

04

Instrumentation Specification

Define exactly how each metric will be captured: event names, properties, trigger conditions, and success/failure criteria. Specify the analytics infrastructure required and the reporting cadence.

What you get back

A measurement framework that connects design work to trackable user and business outcomes.

  • Metric map linking each design goal to specific behavioral and attitudinal measurements
  • Baseline values and improvement targets for each metric with justification
  • Instrumentation specification: event names, triggers, and success criteria for each metric
  • Reporting template showing how metrics will be reviewed and by whom
  • Anti-metrics list identifying numbers that look meaningful but should not drive design decisions

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about installing and running these Claude Skills.

Task success rate is the percentage of users who complete a defined task without abandoning or requiring assistance. It is measured by observing a sample of users attempting the task under controlled or natural conditions and recording whether each attempt resulted in completion, failure, or abandonment. A task success rate above 78 percent is generally considered passing; rates below 60 percent indicate significant usability issues that warrant redesign.
Time-on-task measures how long it takes a user to complete a specific defined task from start to finish. Session duration measures total time on the product in a single visit. These metrics can move in opposite directions: a redesign that reduces time-on-task (users accomplish goals faster) might also reduce session duration (a good thing if the goal was efficiency) or increase it (if the freed time leads to more exploration). Always pair time-on-task with task success rate to avoid optimizing for speed at the expense of accuracy.
CSAT (Customer Satisfaction Score) measures satisfaction with a specific interaction or transaction, typically on a five-point scale immediately after the event. NPS (Net Promoter Score) measures overall loyalty and likelihood to recommend, typically on an 11-point scale at a relationship level. CSAT is more sensitive to specific design changes; NPS reflects cumulative experience over time. Both are attitudinal and should be paired with behavioral metrics to form a complete picture.
Improvement targets should be grounded in the magnitude of the design change and historical benchmarks for similar changes. A small copy change might move task success rate by two to three percentage points; a full redesign of a core flow might target a ten to fifteen point improvement. Targets should also account for the starting baseline: moving from 45 percent to 55 percent success rate is a relative improvement of 22 percent, which requires significant change in the design.
Pageviews and time-on-page are the most commonly misused UX metrics because they are ambiguous: high time-on-page can mean deep engagement or serious confusion, and high pageviews can mean efficient navigation or getting lost. Click-through rate without downstream context measures interest but not success. Avoid using any metric that can increase as a result of both positive and negative user behavior without being able to distinguish between the two.
