Open the GitHub Repo

What the Fitts's Law actually does

Fitts's Law translates a mathematical formula into concrete sizing and placement decisions for interactive targets.

Fitts's Law states that the time to move to a target is a function of the target's size and the distance to it. Larger targets that are closer to the starting position are faster and easier to hit. While the formula itself is rarely applied literally in design work, its implications are concrete: primary actions should be large and close to the user's likely cursor or thumb position, while destructive actions should be small and far away.

This skill applies the law's principles to audit and improve touch targets, click zones, CTA placement, navigation elements, and any interactive control where speed and accuracy matter. It is particularly valuable on mobile, where motor control is less precise, and in accessibility contexts where users may have limited dexterity. The output is a set of actionable sizing and placement recommendations grounded in the law's logic.

How it works

The audit runs through four stages: map, measure, identify violations, and recommend corrections.

Map Interactive Targets

Catalogue every interactive element in the scope: buttons, links, form controls, navigation items, and icons. Record each element's current size, its position relative to likely starting points, and its frequency of use.

Measure Against Thresholds

Compare touch targets against minimum size guidelines (44x44pt on mobile per Apple HIG, 48x48dp per Material Design). Identify elements where the visual target is smaller than the interactive area and note the discrepancy.

Identify Placement Violations

Evaluate primary actions against thumb-reach zones for mobile and cursor resting positions for desktop. Flag CTAs that are far from where users are likely to be after completing the preceding step.

Recommend Sizing and Placement Corrections

For each violation, specify a corrected target size and position. Group recommendations by impact, prioritising primary actions and frequently used controls first.

Apple's Human Interface Guidelines recommend a minimum of 44x44 points, while Material Design specifies 48x48 density-independent pixels. These are floor values, not targets. High-frequency primary actions should be significantly larger. The key insight from Fitts's Law is that doubling a target's size reduces acquisition time more than halving the distance to it.
On a landing page, users typically arrive with their cursor near the centre of the screen. Placing the primary CTA near the end of the content flow means users must travel a long distance to reach it. Fitts's Law suggests placing primary CTAs close to where attention will naturally land after reading the preceding content, or using a sticky CTA that stays close regardless of scroll position.
The visual size is how large an element appears on screen. The interactive target size is the actual tappable or clickable area, which can be larger than the visual representation. Best practice is to expand the interactive area using padding so small icons or text links have adequate touch targets without changing their visual appearance.
Fitts's Law implies that elements which are harder to reach are less likely to be activated accidentally. Destructive actions such as delete or remove should be small, placed away from the primary action, and separated by adequate spacing. This reduces accidental activation without requiring a confirmation dialog for every interaction.
For keyboard users, Fitts's Law applies to the number of tab stops rather than physical distance. Reducing the number of focusable elements between the user's current position and the target action is the keyboard equivalent of reducing distance. For users with motor control differences, larger targets have an outsized benefit, as precision decreases and the cost of missing a target increases.
