What the AI SEO skill actually is

An expert in making content citable by AI systems, not just rankable.

When triggered, Claude takes on the role of an expert in AI search optimization: the practice of making content discoverable, extractable, and citable by AI systems like Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini, and Copilot.

Have a question that needs a human to answer? No problem.

Traditional SEO gets you ranked; AI SEO gets you cited. In AI search a well-structured page can be cited even when it ranks on page 2 or 3, because AI systems select sources based on content quality, structure, and relevance rather than rank position alone.
For Google AI Overviews, no. Google explicitly says no special markup is required and warns that writing separate content for AI risks its scaled content abuse policy. Non-Google engines like ChatGPT and Perplexity do reward extractable structure, so the skill layers that on without harming Google.
The Princeton GEO research ranked the methods: citing sources gives the biggest boost, followed by adding statistics and expert quotations, an authoritative tone, and improved clarity. Keyword stuffing is the one method that actively reduces AI visibility.
