What the Feedback Patterns actually does

Feedback patterns are the system-level language your product uses to tell users what is happening.

Every action a user takes deserves a response. Whether that response is a subtle confirmation toast, a persistent status badge, a blocking alert, or a progress bar depends on the action's duration, reversibility, and consequence. Without a coherent feedback system, products give inconsistent signals, leaving users unsure whether their action worked, still in progress, or silently failed.

This skill covers the full vocabulary of system feedback: confirmations, success states, progress indicators, in-app notifications, toast messages, banner alerts, and destructive-action warnings. The output is a cohesive system where each feedback type has a defined role, a consistent visual treatment, a specified placement, and a clear dismissal behaviour, so users always know what the product is doing and what they should do next.

Toast notifications are ephemeral, non-blocking messages that confirm a completed action and auto-dismiss after a few seconds. Banner alerts are persistent, often require user acknowledgement, and communicate conditions that affect the current view or session rather than a specific past action. Toasts are for confirmations; banners are for ongoing status.
A standard toast should remain visible for 4 to 5 seconds, long enough for a user to read a short message without being too disruptive. Messages that require user action should either persist until dismissed or have a significantly longer duration. Always provide a manual dismiss option so users who read slowly or miss the toast can still access the message.
Use a determinate progress indicator (a bar with percentage) when the system can calculate how much of the task is complete. Use an indeterminate spinner or animation when the duration is unknown. Switching from indeterminate to determinate mid-operation is acceptable and helps users feel informed once progress data becomes available.
Batch non-urgent notifications rather than surfacing each event immediately. Define a priority hierarchy so high-urgency alerts always interrupt while low-priority confirmations queue and display after the user completes their current action. Avoid triggering multiple simultaneous toasts by enforcing a single visible toast rule with a queue.
Destructive-action confirmations should never auto-dismiss. They must require explicit user input, either confirming or cancelling, before proceeding. They should also be immune to accidental keyboard shortcuts. Use a modal dialog rather than a toast or banner for actions that cannot be undone.
