Open the GitHub Repo

What the Empathy Map actually does

Synthesizes scattered user research into a shared picture of the user that aligns the whole team around who they are designing for.

An empathy map is a four-quadrant synthesis tool that organizes what is known about a user into four dimensions: what they Say (verbatim quotes and expressed opinions), what they Think (beliefs, concerns, and motivations they may not express aloud), what they Do (observed behaviors and actions), and what they Feel (emotional state and attitude). The four quadrants together produce a more complete portrait than any single research output alone.

This skill guides you through the synthesis process, from raw research data to a completed empathy map that can be used in design reviews, sprint kick-offs, and cross-functional alignment sessions. The output is a document that makes the user visible to people on the team who did not participate in the research, creating shared empathy rather than shared assumption.

How it works

The empathy map is built in four stages from raw data to a validated shared artifact.

Data Collection

Gather the research inputs: interview transcripts, usability test recordings, diary study entries, support tickets, and any observational field research. The empathy map is only as good as the evidence it is built on. Identify which user segment the map will represent and filter inputs to that segment.

Quadrant Mapping

Work through each quadrant systematically. Says: extract direct quotes from interviews and transcripts. Does: list observed behaviors from sessions and field research. Thinks: infer beliefs and concerns from context cues, indirect language, and what participants did not say. Feels: identify emotional signals from tone, body language, and expressed frustration or delight.

Team Synthesis Session

Run a collaborative mapping session with design, product, and engineering team members, each contributing items from their own contact with users. Diversity of input produces a more complete map and creates shared ownership. Facilitate discussion on contradictions between quadrants: these are often the most revealing moments in the exercise.

Validation and Distribution

Review the completed map with a user researcher or against the raw data to check for unsupported inferences, particularly in the Thinks and Feels quadrants. Publish the map in a shared workspace and reference it in design reviews to keep the user visible throughout the development cycle.

Says contains direct quotes and things the user explicitly stated in interviews or feedback. Thinks contains beliefs, concerns, and motivations that the research suggests are present but that the user may not articulate directly. For example, a user might Say 'the process is a bit slow' while Thinking 'I do not trust that my data was saved.' The gap between the two quadrants is often where the most actionable design insights live.
A single empathy map should represent a specific user segment or persona, not all users. If research reveals two or three meaningfully different user types, build a separate map for each. A map that tries to represent everyone ends up representing no one specifically enough to be useful for design decisions.
Every item in Thinks and Feels should be traceable to a specific research signal: a hesitation in a usability session, a repeated question in interviews, a tone shift when discussing a particular topic. Mark inferences that have weaker evidence with a question mark so the team knows which items need additional research validation.
Empathy maps are most valuable at two moments: at the start of a new design initiative, to establish shared understanding of the user before ideation begins, and when a team is disagreeing about a design direction, to ground the conversation in what is known about the user rather than what each person prefers.
A persona is a composite character profile that includes demographic information, goals, and behavior patterns. An empathy map is a synthesis tool focused specifically on the cognitive and emotional experience of the user in a particular context. Empathy maps are faster to build and more directly tied to research data. Personas provide broader context but require more interpretation. The two are complementary rather than interchangeable.
