Claude Skills for Critique Information Density

Critique a screen's information density — evaluating cognitive load, content prioritisation, scanning pattern support, and whether progressive disclosure is used to show complexity only when needed.

Step 6: Run the critique-information-density skill in Claude

What the Critique Information Density actually does

Evaluates how much information a screen presents and whether its density is appropriate for the user's task and context.

Information density critique assesses whether a screen presents too much, too little, or the right amount of information for the task at hand. It examines cognitive load through the number of decisions, data points, and content units visible simultaneously; evaluates content prioritisation to check that the most important information receives the most visual prominence; and assesses whether scanning patterns such as F-pattern or Z-pattern are supported by the layout structure.

The critique also evaluates the use of progressive disclosure: whether complexity is revealed incrementally as users need it, rather than surfaced all at once. Findings distinguish between density problems caused by too much content and those caused by poor hierarchy, because each requires a different type of solution.

How it works

The skill steps through your inputs and builds the output in four stages.

01

Cognitive Load Inventory

Count the number of distinct information units, decisions, and content types visible simultaneously on the screen.

02

Priority Alignment Check

Compare visual prominence (size, weight, position) against the actual importance of each content item to the user's primary task.

03

Scanning Pattern Assessment

Evaluate whether the layout structure supports the expected F-pattern or Z-pattern scan path for the content type and user context.

04

Progressive Disclosure Audit

Identify which content is secondary or conditional and assess whether it is appropriately hidden behind disclosure controls.

What you get back

A density critique report with cognitive load measurements and prioritisation recommendations.

  • Cognitive load score with element count and decision point inventory
  • Content priority matrix comparing visual prominence against task importance
  • Scan path analysis with annotated F-pattern or Z-pattern overlay
  • Progressive disclosure opportunities list with implementation notes
  • Density reduction recommendations ordered by cognitive impact

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about installing and running these Claude Skills.

A practical heuristic is to count the number of distinct decisions a user must make before completing the primary task, and the number of distinct content types simultaneously visible. Miller's law suggests 7 plus or minus 2 as a working memory limit, but modern research supports aiming for fewer than 5 competing focal points on a single screen.
Progressive disclosure is a pattern that hides secondary or conditional information behind a user action, revealing it only when needed. It should be used when a screen contains information that is relevant to only a subset of users or only at a specific task stage. Overusing it adds interaction cost for users who need the information immediately.
Data-heavy tools such as dashboards and analytics platforms often serve expert users who benefit from high density and would be slowed by progressive disclosure. Consumer apps typically serve users with shorter sessions and lower task familiarity, where lower density and stronger prioritisation reduce abandonment. Density critique must always reference the user context and expertise level.
The F-pattern describes how users scan text-heavy content: they read fully across the top, partially across a second line, and then scan vertically down the left edge. Content placed in the first two horizontal bands and along the left margin receives the most attention. Critical information placed outside these zones is frequently missed on first scan.
Yes. Under-dense screens force users to navigate multiple steps to collect information they could have accessed together, increasing task completion time and the risk of losing context between steps. Enterprise and productivity tools frequently err toward too little density after usability feedback, creating the opposite problem of too many clicks per task.
