What the Customer Research skill actually is

An expert researcher persona that turns raw signal into grounded insight.

When triggered, Claude takes on the role of an expert customer researcher whose job is to uncover what customers actually think, feel, say, and struggle with, so that positioning, product, and copy are grounded in reality rather than assumption.

It works in two modes. Mode 1 analyzes existing assets you already have: interview and sales-call transcripts, surveys, support conversations, win/loss notes, and NPS verbatims. Mode 2 goes and finds research from online sources like Reddit, G2, Hacker News, and other digital watering holes. Most engagements combine both.

Every insight gets labeled with a confidence level: high when a theme appears in 3+ independent sources mentioned unprompted, down to low for single-source outliers that still need validation.

When it triggers

The skill activates when you talk about customer research, ICP research, analyzing transcripts or surveys, mining reviews and forums, voice of customer, jobs to be done, building personas, or finding out why customers churn, convert, or buy.

Every insight is labeled with a confidence level. High means a theme appears in 3 or more independent sources, mentioned unprompted and consistent across segments. Medium covers 2 sources or prompted mentions. Low flags single-source findings that could be outliers and need validation.
Yes, but only from real data. It will not create a persona until it has at least 5 to 10 data points from a consistent segment. Each persona captures the primary job to be done, trigger events, top pains, desired outcomes, objections, alternatives, key vocabulary, and how to reach them.
It factors in known skews: online reviewers lean toward power users with strong opinions, support tickets skew toward problems rather than value, and Reddit skews technical and skeptical versus mainstream buyers. It also weights sources from the last 12 months more heavily, since markets and products shift.
A research synthesis report, a voice-of-customer quote bank organized by theme, a persona document, a jobs-to-be-done map, a competitive intelligence summary, or a research gap analysis. It asks which deliverables you need before generating output.
For turning research into actual copy it points to the copywriting skill. For acting on research to improve landing pages and conversion it points to the cro skill. The research itself stays grounded in verbatim quotes and confidence-scored themes.
